The Rideshare Driver Drove Me Home Four Nights in a Row novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Home
It was snowing on Friday night, the first snow of the year.
I stood under the awning with my knife roll and ordered my own ride.
I did it on my own phone, on my own account, with my own card.
I typed the pickup, and the drop-off, and the app thought for a moment.
"Your driver Mateo is 2 minutes away."
Behind me the back door banged, and the whole closing crew came out in their coats.
Nobody went home.
Two line cooks, the second cook and the dishwasher stood in a row on the wet sidewalk and watched the corner.
The dishwasher had brought a thermos.
"Chef," one of them said, "is it true it's his last one?"
"It's his last late shift."
"We made a sign," the dishwasher said, and held it up.
It was a piece of cardboard.
On it, in marker, it said FIVE STARS.
I took it from him and tucked it under my arm.
The gray Camry came around the corner with its wipers going and slid up to the curb as smoothly as it had the first time.
The snow lit up in the headlights.
Mateo got out.
He came around the hood in his sweatshirt with snow on his shoulders.
He opened the back door and held it, and the cooks let out a cheer.
His face went red.
I put my hand on his forearm.
I held on one beat longer than the curb required, and he stood still and let me.
"Evening, ma'am," he said.
"Don't push it."
I got in the back seat, and he shut the door.
The car smelled like cold air and coffee, and a fresh napkin lay folded on the seat beside me.
The rosary swung once on the mirror.
He got in and checked the mirror, and his eyes met mine in it.
