Chapter 8: Kitchen Counter
I woke at ten with the sun on my face and a man's arm over my ribs.
We had made it as far as the bed, and no further.
He had lain down beside me in his shirt and jeans and said he'd close his eyes for a minute.
I had pulled the quilt over both of us, and that was the end of the night.
Mateo slept on his stomach with his mouth open.
The scar on his chin was pale in the light.
I got out from under his arm without waking him and went to the kitchen in his sweatshirt.
By the time the coffee was done, I heard the bed creak and his bare steps in the hall.
He stood in the doorway with his hair flat on one side and a crease from the pillow down his cheek.
"Hi," he said.
"Rule three is gone."
"I heard," he said.
"So you're allowed to be in my kitchen."
He came in, looked at the sink full of last night's pans, and rolled up his sleeves.
"I'll wash," Mateo said.
"You're a guest."
"I'm a guy who can wash a cup."
I owned two coffee cups in the whole duplex, a blue one and a chipped white one, and I'd put both in the sink.
He ran the water hot and took the sponge and scrubbed them carefully, inside and out.
I leaned against the counter and watched his back.
The sun came in over the sink.
I saw the long muscles of his forearms flex as he turned the cups under the tap.
"Can I ask you something?" he said, to the window.
"You always ask that."
"What happened with him?"
I had been waiting for it.
I found that I could say it without lowering my eyes.
"In March he came home on a Tuesday and packed the Subaru," I said. "He said he'd been unhappy for a long time. I asked what I'd done, and he said I'd know if I thought about it."
