Chapter 21: The Barred Gate

"How many?" Mu-hyeon said.

"Forty elders, Young Master. Maybe a hundred swords. The rest of the mountain doesn't know which way to jump."

"And Uncle?"

"Alive. They've got him in the ancestral hall in chains."

Mu-hyeon looked at Yeon-hwa.

He didn't ask what she wanted to do.

He had stopped asking that a while ago.

"I'm going up," she said.

"I know."

"Alone, through the gate. If I need you to fight my way home, they'll say so for the rest of my life."

He was quiet for a moment.

"Then I'll walk you to the gate," he said. "And stand outside it. Next to it."

"That's cheating."

"I'm a demon. I'm marrying one."

Ye-rin stayed at the bottom with the horses, swearing at both of them.

Yeon-hwa and Mu-hyeon climbed the road together in the noon sun.

Her left arm was strapped across her chest in a sling, Ye-rin's stitches pulling with every step.

Her father's sword hung on her right hip.

The black gate was shut when they reached it.

The heads were still on their hooks above it.

On the wall stood a line of men in red and black, and none of them would look at her.

Yeon-hwa stepped out in front of the gate where the Alliance riders had stood, and looked up.

"Open the gate," she said.

Nobody moved.

"Ten days ago some of you were crying on your knees in that hall. Open the gate."
