Soren was still in the Back Room when I came in from the alley.
It was ten past four, and shift change was only fifteen minutes long.
He was pouring coffee from a battered thermos into two paper cups.
He had never done that before, and he held one out to me.
"My grandfather says this is the best fifteen minutes of any day," he said. "I thought I'd test it."
I took the cup, and I kept my hand around it.
The treaty said no lying, ever, and it did not say anything about timing.
"I got a phone call," I said.
I told him all of it, in order.
There was the voicemail ten days ago, the call tonight, the team of six and the Friday deadline.
He listened with his pencil in his hand and wrote nothing down.
"What is the salary?" he asked.
I told him.
He nodded slowly.
"That is a very good job," he said. "It's what you trained for."
"You'd be the head of something instead of someone's assistant."
