The card was written in his tidy pencil, and the ink had not smudged once, which meant he had copied it out three times.

I looked up.
Soren Vinter stood in the middle of a bakery with no walls in it, holding his breath.
He had a pencil behind his ear, and his hands were not quite steady.
"You don't have a ring on the card," I said.
"It's in my apron," he said hoarsely. "I didn't want to put it in the Q and A section."
I took the pencil from behind his ear and checked all three boxes, hard enough to dent the card.
His shoulders came down, a release I felt in my own ribs.
Then he reached into his apron, and took out a plain gold ring, and put it on my finger with a hand that shook.
There were letters engraved inside the band.
I held it up to the oven's glow and read them.

"Swap at minute seventeen," I said.
"The first night," said Soren. "You drew a crooked line on my oven floor."
"At minute seventeen I moved your trays into the hot spot without saying a word."
"I know. I remember it."
"I thought, I would like to do that for the rest of my life."
