Chapter 12: Where It Went In
"The pledge stays on the mountain," Woo-jin said. "That's the Truce."
"Then I break it."
They were sitting on the floor of the annex with a map between them.
Mu-yeol said it the way he said everything, mildly.
"They'll call it war."
"They'll call it a great many things."
"Mu-yeol, the Alliance will say the Hall broke the pledge. They'll have every sect behind them in a month."
"They'll have them behind her anyway."
Woo-jin had no answer to that.
Mu-yeol folded the map.
"You'll stay here," he said. "You're the host. Nobody can blame you if I run."
"I'm coming."
"Woo-jin."
"A host may see his guests to the Fork. It's the old courtesy. I'll say I wanted to honor your brother."
"And when they ask why a pledge rode out with him?"
"I'll say I couldn't stop you." Woo-jin smiled. "That's even true."
Mu-yeol looked at him for a long time.
Woo-jin thought he wanted to argue.
Then Mu-yeol saw the set of Woo-jin's chin and the line of his shoulders and decided he would lose.
"You are the most stubborn man I have ever met," he said.
"You killed me. You should have known."
Mu-yeol's face changed.
He reached across the map and took Woo-jin's wrist, and the grip was so careful that it hurt.
"Do not say that to me tonight," he said, very low.
"Why?"
"Because I'm trying not to think about it."
Woo-jin put his free hand over Mu-yeol's.
The lamp hissed.
Outside, in the barracks yard, sixteen wounded men were singing something dreadful about a pig.
"Mu-yeol," Woo-jin said. "I want to ask you for something."
"Ask."
"Don't be gentle. Not tonight."
Mu-yeol's eyes darkened.
"Take off my robe," Woo-jin said.
Mu-yeol undid it himself, slowly, and let it slide off Woo-jin's shoulders.
Woo-jin knelt up, naked in the lamplight, with Mu-yeol's hand still round his wrist.
He turned it, and laid Mu-yeol's palm flat against his chest.
On the left.
Over the heart.
"This is where it went in," Woo-jin said.
Mu-yeol's breath stopped.
"I know where."
"Then bite me there."
Woo-jin watched it hit him.
Mu-yeol was a big man, and Woo-jin had thought him impossible to shake.
