Chapter 15: The Cliff
The Cliff of Nine Winds stood over the Fork.
Woo-jin climbed it in the dark, by a goat path he had never walked in this life and knew by heart.
His legs remembered every turn.
The sky went from black to iron to the color of a bruise.
The wind came up out of the gorge with a sound.
At the top there was a flat shelf of grey stone, and a long drop.
Mu-yeol was standing at the edge with his back turned.
He had taken off the open black robe and folded it on a rock, and his bare shoulders were wet with mist.
Dull Bell lay unwrapped across his palms.
Woo-jin stopped ten paces away.
Ten paces, as in the annex.
"I thought you wouldn't come," Mu-yeol said.
"You told me to."
"I have told you many things."
He turned.
His face was not calm.
It was the face from the first life, the last one Woo-jin had seen, the one that looked like the dying man.
Woo-jin drew Cold Crane.
The thin blade rang softly in the wind.
"Do you remember," Mu-yeol said, "what you did here?"
"I stood," Woo-jin said. "I stood and I did not lift my guard."
"Do it again."
Woo-jin looked at him.
He looked at the whole broad, ruined face, at the scar on the neck, at the beads on the wrist.
He thought, this is right.
