Chapter 13: What He Asked For
Liyan came up out of the river onto the Dragon Gate Shoal, and the gravel was cold under his knees.
He knelt there, streaming water, with the sun in his eyes and no idea where he meant to go.
The stair opened in the river behind him.
He did not turn around.
He heard someone climbing out, and then a long silence, and then one careful step on the stones.
"I will not come closer," Mingjue said. "Tell me if I may stand here."
"Stand where you like."
The dragon stopped an arm's length away.
His long hair hung dripping down his back, and the hem of his court robe dragged in the shallows.
"I want all of it," Liyan said. "Not on the Double Ninth. Now."
"Yes."
"And not the way you read it to the court. The way it was."
Mingjue sat down on the gravel very heavily.
"The first flood I remember drowned a village called Three Willows," he said. "I was two hundred years old."
"I could not stop it. The rain falls on the mountains, and the mountains give it to the Black Water."
