Chapter 23: The Dragon Takes Up Calligraphy
A year later, the worst student in the Lower Ferry schoolhouse was thirty-three years old and six feet four.
He sat at the back, folded onto a desk made for a ten-year-old.
His knees were up around his ears, and he gripped a brush in his fist.
"Master Ao," said a small girl at the next desk, with great patience. "You are holding it wrong."
"I am holding it as instructed."
"You're holding it like you want to stab the paper."
"I do not want to stab the paper."
"Then why did it come out like that?"
Mingjue looked down at the character he had made.
It resembled a crab falling off a cliff.
"The paper was in the way," he said with dignity.
The whole class of twelve burst out laughing.
Liyan, standing at the slate with a lump of chalk, let it run for a moment, as a good teacher should.
Then he said, "That will do. Open your readers," and walked down the aisle.
He bent beside the back desk and covered the big hand with his own.
