Chapter 24: The River Kept a Husband
Eight years later, Liyan found the first white hair.
It was in the evening, in the schoolhouse yard, with the late sun on the back of Mingjue's head.
His hair had gone black in the first year, from the roots, the way a mortal's does.
Now it hung to his shoulders in a plain dark tail, tied back with a strip of faded blue cloth.
And there, over the left ear, one single strand shone.
"Hold still," said Liyan.
"What is it?"
"Nothing. A hair."
Mingjue went very quiet under his hands.
"White," he said.
"One."
"I am forty-one. I did not think I would live to see one."
"You're not allowed to sound pleased about it."
"I am extremely pleased."
He turned around on the bench and Liyan saw that his eyes were wet and bright, and that the lines at their corners had deepened.
They were good lines.
Liyan had counted every one.
That night they went down to the palace, because the Grandmother had said they might.
The hot spring grotto had not changed.
The green glass walls glowed faintly.
