Chapter 12: The Feed
In Denver there were two security men outside the Well, standing at the door.
The latch opened from the inside, and they knew it.
They looked at the floor when I went in.
Bev met me by her board with a roll of gaffer tape around her wrist and a face.
"The new boy's at front of house," she said.
"He's got the master router for the vocal channel. I can't touch it from here."
"Can you stop him?"
"No. I can only listen."
She leaned in.
"If the feed dies, you keep singing. You hear me? Whatever happens, you keep singing as if they can hear."
"Why?"
"Because it's the only thing Vaughn doesn't plan for."
Fraser came down the steel steps ten minutes before the house lights went down.
He wore his stage black, with the collar already open.
He took my face in both hands and kissed me, long and slow.
He did it in front of the two security men and Bev and God.
"Whatever happens up there," he whispered into my mouth, "keep singing. Promise me."
