By the third morning at Bev's house, there were forty strangers on her lawn.
It was a grey shingled house on a bay outside Tacoma.
It had a yellow kitchen and a driveway that had never held more than one truck.
I stood at the window in a borrowed sweatshirt and read their signs.
WELL GIRL.
SING, YUNA.
WHO BIT FRASER?
A girl of maybe nineteen had written WE HEARD YOU in glitter on a pizza box.
"How?" I said.
"Karaoke," Dougie said from the stove, where he was ruining eggs.
"Some lad matched the voice on the Denver video to a clip from a bar in Tacoma."
"It was forty seconds."
"It was forty seconds of the same voice, and the internet's got nothing but time."
Bev came in from the porch in her robe with her glasses on her head.
"I've lived here nineteen years," she said, "and no one has ever parked on my verge."
