Chapter 18: New York

Madison Square Garden has its own weather, and under the stage it smells of hot metal and old popcorn.

Bev lay on her back in the substructure with a flashlight in her teeth and a cable in each fist.

"I don't do cloak and dagger," she said around the flashlight. "I do cable."

"What are you doing?"

"Making a door nobody's drawn on the plans."

She clipped a grey line into the stage box and ran it past the front-of-house router.

The far end went into the board outside the Well.

The Garden's Well was a little bigger than the others, a padded box bolted into the steel.

I sat on the stool and tested the mic with the Gravel switched off.

"Say something," Bev said.

"Nobody's coming to carry you."

My voice came out of the speakers in the empty house and rolled around the empty Garden.

"Back door works," she said, and took the flashlight out of her mouth. "He'll never see it."

Boots rang on the steel steps behind me.

Vaughn came down alone in his black overcoat, with two security men behind him and a leather folder under his arm.

Riggers stopped coiling cable and turned to watch.

"Miss Kwon." He didn't look at the cable. "A private word."
