Chapter 4: The Court Mage

The Court Mage was a thin man in a long grey robe, and he was kind to Yui from the first minute.

That was what frightened her.

Verrick Dornbach had summoned her across a world, and he took both her hands in the courtyard.

"My dear Lady Yui. Ninety-nine men in three days. The Queen will weep when she hears."

"I only did what I came to do."

"You did it better than any healer in Eldmark." His soft voice dropped. "I should like to see your notes. I am told you keep a chart."

Yui hesitated, and then handed over the notebook.

She did not know why her stomach tightened.

He turned the pages with a long, clean finger, and stopped at the drawings of the black marks.

Each one was dated and matched to a patient's name, with a line of tidy handwriting beneath.

"Remarkable," Verrick said. "May I keep it for the evening?"

"I'd rather have it back tonight."

"Naturally."

He tucked it into his sleeve and took her arm.

They walked through the mess hall, past the long tables, and he spoke to her about the Thaw and the Black Fen, and the three thousand men of the Royal Shield who would march when the ice cracked.

Then, very gently, he said, "I understand you have been nursing the Commander at night."

"I change her bandages."

"Every night. For three nights. I wonder if that is wise."

"Why wouldn't it be wise?"

"She is a soldier, Lady Yui." He smiled sadly. "A blade kept warm in a velvet case does not cut. I would ask you to let her keep her edge until the Thaw is over."
