Chapter 21: Papers

Gran was already awake.

She was sitting up straight in the chair with her eyes open, like she'd heard every word in her sleep.

"Lawyer," she said.

"Lawyer," Shauna said.

I looked at the crib.

My daughter was asleep on her back with both fists up beside her ears.

Seven hours old.

I thought about being afraid.

I'd been afraid of the Thorncrofts for seven years.

I was so tired of it.

"Shauna," I said. "Give me that coffee. Then let them in."

"You're in a hospital gown."

"So I'll be comfortable."

Evan's mother came in first.

She was in the same navy silk as last night.

The lawyer behind her was a tall man in his sixties with a leather folder.

He didn't look at the crib.

Evan's mother did.

She looked at it for a long time from the doorway, and didn't come any closer.

"Miss Furlong," the lawyer said. "I represent the Thorncroft family. In light of last night's public statement by Mr. Thorncroft, the family intends to protect its interests in the child."

"Her," I said.

"I'm sorry?"

"She's a girl. She's seven hours old. She's right there. Her."
