Chapter 22: The Hearing
On Tuesday morning, Gran put on her good blue dress.
She put the 1951 rent receipt in her handbag, frame and all, and wouldn't let anybody carry it.
I wore the baby.
She was a month and a day old, tucked into a gray wool sling Aidan had cut and sewn for me over a weekend.
The council chamber was a round room on the fifth floor of City Hall, with seats going up.
When we came out of the elevator, the hallway was already full.
Brides.
The woman from 1962 was there on her folding chair.
The lavender lady was there with half her luncheon circle.
Four brides from the waiting list held a sign that said WE'RE WAITING.
The seats filled, then the standing room.
Somebody opened the doors so the hallway could listen.
Aidan was in the second row in his black suit.
Evan was sitting alone at the end of the fourth row.
His mother wasn't there.
At the front, the man with the leather folder sat at the table marked OPPOSED, next to an empty chair.
The chair of the committee read the item.
Gran went first.
