Chapter 7: The Hem

Brynn made her entrance at three o'clock sharp, in sunglasses, with her purse swinging.

I was there by two forty-five.

I sat on a velvet bench in a shop full of white, with my cast in my lap and my phone in the cardigan pocket, recording.

Margo had charged it for me.

She had also made me wear her good cardigan and told me I looked respectable and put together.

The shop owner came out from behind a rack of veils.

She was a calm woman with a measuring tape around her neck, and she glanced at my wrist and then at my face.

"You're the bridesmaid?" she asked.

"I'm the ring-bearer," I said. "I'm also the bride's best friend, I believe."

She looked at me a moment longer than politeness required.

Then Brynn swept in behind her, and the shop owner's face went smooth.

"Ladies! Isn't this a dream?" Brynn dropped her bag and spun once on the carpet. "Corina, you came."

"I said I would."

"I know. It's just so brave." Brynn turned to the two assistants and put a hand over her heart. "Corina has been through so much. Her fiancé was the groom, you see, and the sweetest thing, she's decided to stand with us anyway."

An assistant's hand stopped on a hanger.

"Her fiancé?" the girl said.

"Oh, it's a long story." Brynn tilted her head. "She tried to hurt herself, you know, when she found out. We're all just so proud of her for being here."

The shop was very quiet.

My face went hot, and I kept my hands in my lap.

I had decided in the truck that I would not give her one flinch.
