Chapter 8: Through the Glass
"Nate."
He turned from the glass so fast he almost fell.
His eyes were swollen, and he looked as if he hadn't slept since the highway.
"June." His voice broke on it. "Is that him? Is that my son?"
"That's Anders."
"He has your hair."
"He has his own hair," I said.
Lena set the brake on my chair and stood behind it with both hands on the grips.
A nurse looked up from her station and then went back to her screen, and I saw her not leave.
"Security put me out of the building at seven," Nate said. "I came back in the side door. I had to see him. I swear I wasn't going to go in the room."
"You're allowed to stand at the glass," I said. "That was the term."
"I know." He wiped his face with his sleeve. "I know it was. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I've been sitting here all night, between the two of them, and I..."
He stopped.
I waited.
He couldn't say it.
"Between the two of them," I said. "Say it."
"I didn't know what to do," he said. "They're both mine."
Lena made a small sound behind me.
"Yes," I said. "They are."
"I can be a father to both. I can fix this. I'll go to counseling, I'll move into an apartment, I'll do whatever you say."
"You'll do whatever I say."
"Anything."
"Then tell me how long you lay next to me and knew."
"June."
"I'm not asking about the affair," I said. "I'm asking about the nights. I want to know about the nights, when I came home from the clinic with a bandage on my arm and cried in the bathroom, and you came in and sat on the edge of the tub."
His face crumpled.
"You held me," I said. "Every single time. You said, we'll try again. You said, it's okay, it's not your fault. I used to lie there afterward and think, nobody has ever loved anyone the way he loves me."
