Chapter 15: The Check
I did not answer him.
I turned to my brother, and Pete took the envelope out of his inside pocket.
He handed it to me with both hands.
"Yes, Broderick," I said. "I have a million and a half on me."
I walked to the edge of the stage and held out the cashier's check.
Nobody took it.
For a moment I stood there with my arm out in front of eight hundred people.
The gray-haired man from the board table stood.
He was perhaps seventy, with a tight white mustache and the stoop of someone who had sat in a great many meetings.
He came up the steps slowly and took the check from my fingers.
He read it, then read it again.
"One million, five hundred and twenty thousand dollars," he said. "Drawn on First Federal, payable to Ashworth Logistics."
"The note is a million five and interest," I said. "I checked it with a lawyer on Friday."
"The lawyer's right."
Broderick spoke the old man's name, once, like a warning.
The old man ignored him.
He lifted the check toward the chandelier.
"As a director of this company," he said, "I accept payment of the Horan note in full. Is there a second to enter it in the minutes?"
