Chapter 24: The Farmhouse Next Door
The neighbor's son met us at the end of my grandmother's old gravel drive at eight on Saturday morning.
He was a big, slow man in a barn coat, and he kept his hands in his pockets.
"I'm sorry about the hour," he said. "I couldn't sleep once I knew."
"Knew what?" I said.
"Come on. I'll show you."
He led us past the farmhouse, where a new porch light glowed over my grandmother's door.
I didn't look at it for long.
We followed frozen ruts along the north fence, through a stand of bare maples.
They led to a clearing I had not stood in since I was nine.
A small house sat in it.
It had two rooms and a tin roof, a chimney with a lean to the left, and a porch no bigger than a bathmat.
Snow lay on its sills.
"The hired man's cottage," I said.
"It's your grandmother's," said the son.
"She bought the lot herself in 1974, for the man who worked her fields."
"The survey for the sale drew its line around the main parcel. The cottage lot was a separate deed."
"I didn't know that."
