Chapter 23: The Bite

The bond did not finish itself.

Hester explained that on the bunkhouse porch the next morning, over two cups of terrible coffee.

"It started because you both wanted it," she said.

"A bond needs a bite and an oath to be whole."

"It can wait."

"It can sit half-made for years."

"Or?"

"Or it can fade, if neither of you picks it up."

"I'm not letting it fade."

"I know." Hester sipped. "I only wanted you to know you had the choice."

"I'm choosing."

"Then choose it properly, child. At the stone. Where you made your last choice. In front of the same moon."

I thought about that for three weeks.

On the night of the full moon I put on a plain dark dress and walked up the Redfern trail with Torin at my side.

He had a stick, which he disliked.

He had a color in his face now that he'd never had in the whole time I'd known him.

His wolf had risen twice in the last month, rust-brown and shy.

Both times he had come back to the bunkhouse grinning.

Dunne met us at the ring.

He wore the Redfern staff across his back and a clean shirt buttoned wrong.

"I didn't call a Court," he said.

"I know."

"But they came anyway."

I looked.

They were all there.

Redfern, the Creek, the Hollow families who had hung back in shame.

Every wolf in the valley stood in a loose circle among the pines.
