Chapter 24: Last Chance
The letter was one page, in pencil, on the back of a feed-store receipt.
*Linnea.
I'm not asking for forgiveness.
I'm asking for one hour at your table, if the Alpha of the Creek will have me.
If not, I'll understand.
I'll be at the mill, rebuilding the roof.
Dad.*
I read it twice by the fire at the foot of the stone, with Torin's arm across my shoulders.
"Well?" he said.
"I don't know."
"You don't have to."
"I know." I folded the paper. "I'm going to anyway."
I went to the mill at noon.
My father was on the roof with a hammer and a mouthful of nails.
He looked down when my boots crunched on the gravel, and the hammer stopped.
"You came," he said, around the nails.
"I'm not staying."
"No."
"There's stew at the Creek hall on Sundays. You can sit at the end of the table. You don't speak unless I speak to you."
He took the nails out of his mouth.
His eyes were wet.
"Yes, Alpha."
"One hour."
"Yes."
"I'm not your daughter tonight," I said. "I'm just the one who's feeding you."
He nodded, and went on nodding, long after I turned my back.
