"She said, 'Tell my mother I called,'" Dermot said.
I held onto the edge of the bar.
"That was all?"
"She said, 'Tell her I left a message. Tell her I'm not angry anymore. Tell her to listen.'"
"Listen to what?"
"I didn't ask her. The current had her by then."
He said it with his eyes shut.
"I carried that to the old woman's back door at four in the morning, and I said it to her face."
"What did Winifred do?"
"She went white and shut the door on me," he said. "Then she opened it again and took ye in."
I let go of the bar.
I did not remember driving back.
I remember the iron gate, and Rafe at the wheel of the golf cart without being asked, and the front steps of the big house.
The front hall was cold and smelled of lavender polish.
Winifred was sitting on a bench beside a narrow table, with her cane across her knees.
