Chapter 16: Brielle's Price
At dawn, Pell Street smelled of wet tar and fried onions from the diner on the corner.
Dermot unlocked the bar himself and set out coffee in chipped mugs.
Brielle came in alone, in the same camel coat, with her blonde bob pinned back.
She stopped just inside the door and looked at the room with open disgust.
"So this is where you grew up," she said.
"This is where I was loved," I said. "Sit down."
She sat on a stool, because the only other choice was the floor.
Two of Dermot's regulars had come in behind her without being asked.
One was the day bartender, a sharp little woman with a towel on her shoulder.
The other was an old longshoreman with hands like shovels, who took the end stool and said nothing.
Rafe stood by the door with his arms crossed.
