Chapter 16: The Ear
I stepped out onto the step and pulled my dad's door shut behind me.
Junie didn't need to hear this.
Neither did my dad.
"Put the pen away," I said.
"Meg, please. Just read it. It's everything your lawyer asked for. More." He pushed the papers at me. "The condo. A payment. I'll put out a statement about the letter. I'll say I lied."
"You did lie."
"I know. I'll say it." His voice cracked. "I'll say anything. Just give me the laptop."
My laptop was in my kit bag on my dad's couch, ten feet behind the door.
It never left my hands anymore.
"Why do you want it so badly, Dex?"
"It's got my match video. My whole career. It's private."
"It's got the club's wide camera feed," I said. "Five years of it. Every bench. Every rail."
He stopped moving.
"Portland," I said. "Minute seven. Kansas City, minute nine. The home game in minute twelve."
His face went white under the tan, slowly.
"Your agent touches his left ear every time," I said. "Then you pull a shirt right in front of the referee."
"Stop."
"I have the timestamps. Do you want them read out loud, or do you want to sit down?"
"Meg. Stop."
"I cut those clips, Dex. I sat at our kitchen island at two in the morning and cut them for you. And I never once looked at the rail."
He sat down on my father's step.
He put the papers on the concrete beside him and his head in his hands.
"You don't know what he does," he said into his palms.
"Then tell me."
"I can't."
"The four hundred thousand."
He looked up.
"It wasn't a loan, was it," I said.
He didn't answer.
His eyes went to the black car idling at the curb.
The windows were tinted.
I couldn't see who was driving.
