Chapter 28: One of Us
"Then take it," I said.
Cody was still standing in the kitchen doorway with his phone in his hand.
"No."
"Cody, take the flag. You gave up your whole fall for me in July."
"And the chief gave it back after the semifinal. That's how I'm on his list." He put the phone on the counter. "You're on a list for the middle. Nobody's ever put a woman in the middle of that final."
"Nobody's ever put you on a final either."
"I've been on a final," he said. "Second division, six years ago. It rained. I was right about everything."
"That's not the same."
"It's close enough for me."
Junie looked from one of us to the other.
"Are you fighting?"
"No," we both said.
"You sound like you're fighting."
"We're negotiating," Cody said.
"That's fighting with longer words," Junie said, and took her bowl to the sink.
We didn't finish it that night, or the next.
On Thursday I said I'd tell the chief to take me off the list.
On Friday Cody said he'd already drafted the email turning it down.
On Saturday morning I said if he sent it, I'd send mine.
