Chapter 30: The Final
It snowed all day on December fifth.
By kickoff the groundsmen had cleared the pitch twice and painted the lines blue so they'd show.
I stood in the tunnel in my black jersey with the match ball under my arm.
Robin was beside me with her fourth official's board.
The two assistants were behind me, both from Oregon, both quiet, both very good.
"How do you feel?" Robin said.
"Cold."
"Liar." She fixed my collar. "Your dad's in the north stand. So's half of Pueblo, I think. They brought a banner. It's spelled right."
The teams lined up behind us.
Front Range in blue.
The Eastern champions in white.
The Front Range goalkeeper caught my eye from the line and nodded once.
The music started.
I walked out first.
Twenty thousand people.
Snow coming down through the floodlights.
They had waved mops and hung banners at me all year.
In November, in this stadium, they'd thrown a sponge.
This time the boos didn't come.
The noise rolled down from every stand, and it wasn't booing.
It was just noise, enormous, for the teams and the snow and the final.
