Chapter 16: Go to Bed
My mother set the duck gun down on the kitchen table, very gently.
"Bryce," she said. "That's enough now."
"Tell them."
"I said enough."
Behind me, the back door opened.
I turned.
Annie had gone out of it.
She was already on the lawn, going down toward the water with her cane, not fast, not stopping.
Toward the boathouse.
"Annie," Bryce said, and shoved past me out the door.
I went after him.
The grass was wet and long, the way my father never let it get. The marsh smelled like salt and mud and last night's storm.
Annie reached the boathouse.
The door hung open on one hinge. She stood in the doorway with one hand on the frame and looked inside.
The bench was still there, under the kayak rack.
Bryce stopped ten feet from her.
I stopped between them.
He didn't seem to see me.
"Annie. Come back up to the house. Please. You shouldn't be down here."
"I was down here," she said, without turning around. "That's the whole problem, Bryce. I was down here."
