Chapter 18: Normal

I didn't pull my wrist away.

I didn't say anything either.

I just let her hold on and watched the dark blood run out through the tube and come back clean.

"Say the rest," I said.

Verity let go of me.

She stared at the ceiling tiles.

"She made the appointment," she said. "In September. She called the donor office herself and said she was you. She has your birthday memorized. She has everything memorized."

"Where did she get my license?"

"Your old room. The shoebox in the closet. Your nursing school ID was in there too, and your braces retainer." A tiny laugh came out of her, and then stopped. "She kept your retainer, Clare."

"And the scrubs?"

"She bought them. She drove to a uniform store in Quincy so nobody would see her. She knew your size." Verity's eyes moved to me, then back to the ceiling. "She did my hair in the upstairs bathroom. Tight and low, like yours. She said I had to look tired, like I'd come off a shift. She put gray powder under my eyes."

The machine hummed.

"She told me what to say," Verity whispered. "She said, tell him you always knew what you were for. She said you'd say yes anyway in the end. She said it was a kindness. That we were saving you from having to decide."
