Chapter 24: The Chair
Delilah waited for me in the church vestibule, beside the stand of unlit candles.
She had her coat on and her suitcase between her feet.
"I won't keep you," she said. "Your husband's waiting."
"He can wait a minute."
"I'm going to Milwaukee tonight," she said. "I rented a room over a flower shop."
"They need someone to answer the phone."
"The grand jury will call me back, and I'll come."
I looked at her.
"I'm not here to ask you to forgive me," she said. "I know what I did to you in that dress."
"You hoped it would go wrong for someone else."
"Yes."
"That is what I can't take back," I said.
"I know."
"But you stood on a stage, with your mother in the room, and said it."
"It was late."
"It was late. It still counted."
She laughed a little, and then she dug into her bag.
"I found this," she said. "In the bride's room, in the church closet."
She held out a long ivory veil, crushed at one end.
"You dropped it at the altar. The sexton gave it to me when I came to get my things."
