Chapter 17: Four Notes
"For your thirteenth birthday," I said.
"October ninth. 2007. Eleven months after." He was still looking at the machine. "I'd stopped talking. He said maybe I could type what I couldn't say."
"And the first note came the same day."
"The same morning." He laughed, a terrible small sound. "I typed my thank-you to him on it. That night."
I put the folder down on his desk.
"Who else touches it?"
"Nobody. The cleaners don't." He stopped. "Aldous. He changes the ribbon. I can't work the cartridge, I never could. He does it every Thanksgiving. He did it three weeks ago, while you were helping Gran with the pies."
The new ribbon.
The ball that pops off in two seconds and fits in a pocket.
I didn't say anything.
I watched him do the math he'd begged me not to make him do.
【No. NO. Aldous wouldn't. He's KIND.】
【Kind people change your ribbon. Kind people also have pockets.】
【I've reread the typewriter chapter four times. Aldous is the one who shows Kitty the machine. Not Lucas. Aldous.】
"I need you to not decide anything yet," Lucas said. "Not until I've seen him. I've known him my whole life."
