Lucas's hand closed on my wrist.
He shook his head once.
I held up one finger.
"In danger how, Aldous?"
"Not on the phone." A soft, sad breath. "Please. Thursday. The little place on Lexington. I'll get the corner table."
"Thursday," I said. "One o'clock."
"Thank you, Jules. You're very brave."
He hung up.
"No," Lucas said.
"Section ten," I said. "Nobody carries anything alone. So we decide together."
"Then I decide no."
"You're one vote."
"Jules, he hums while he carves meat."
"And I talk to men with knives for a living." I picked up the magnet and stuck it back on the fridge. "He called me. I didn't call him. He wants to give me something. I want to see what."

I called Marge.
I told her before she could hang up on me.
"You're benched," she said. "You don't run him."
"I'm not running him. He invited his cousin's wife to lunch."
"Jules."
"If I say no, he knows something's wrong."
"Your phone records," she said finally. "The whole time. You don't ask him anything a cop would ask. You don't lead him. And if he hands you something, you don't touch it bare. You bring it straight to me."
