Chapter 20: Brake Lines
Lucas crossed Lexington against the light.
A cab stood on its brakes and leaned on the horn.
He stopped in front of me on the sidewalk with snow on his shoulders.
"What did he give you?"
I opened the napkin an inch.
He looked at the four silver rings on the fob.
He didn't say anything.
He took the napkin from my hand, folded it shut over the key, and gave it back to me very gently.
"Take it to Marge," he said. "Right now. I'm coming."
Marge met us at the curb outside the precinct.
She took the napkin, looked inside, and swore in a way I'd never heard from her in nine years.
Then she bagged it.
"You touched it?"
"Through the napkin."
"Good girl." She looked at Lucas. "Mr. Thackeray. Go home."
"No," Lucas said.
She looked at him over her glasses.
He looked back.
"Fine," she said. "But you sit where I put you."
The car was exactly where Aldous said it would be.
East Seventy-Second, second level, near the stairs, nosed in against the wall.
Gray. New. Dealer plates.
