Chapter 25: The Staircase
Lucas's hand closed on my arm.
"No."
"He asked for me."
"He has a gun at your sister's head and he asked for you. That's the reason for no."
"That's the reason it's me," I said. "I'm the only one in this building who does this for a living."
Marge came through the side door at a run with two detectives behind her.
She took one look at the staircase and keyed her radio.
"No shots fired. One armed man, one hostage, grand staircase. Get me ESU and get me a perimeter on Fifth."
Then she looked at me.
"You're benched," she said.
"Not from this. This isn't the case. This is a callout."
Marge looked up the stairs at Kitty's white face.
She looked back at me.
"Go," she said.
I bent and pulled the gun off my ankle and put it in her hand.
Then I walked to the podium and picked up the wireless microphone Kitty had dropped.
It was still on.
I clipped it to the collar of my windbreaker.
"What are you doing?" Lucas said.
"Four hundred witnesses," I said. "I want every one of them to hear this."
