Chapter 18: Hurn Falls
Hurn did not slow down.
He ran straight at the pit, with the spear leveled, and his six men fanned out behind him.
Lois saw the tip of it come, bright in the sun, aimed at the middle of her coat.
She had time for one thought, and it was an irritated one.
She did not have another flare.
"Get behind me," she said to Ilu, which was stupid, since Ilu was four and she was the one who needed to get behind.
Ilu did not move.
The young father rose from the edge of the pit.
He still held the strip of dried meat in one hand, and his three-year-old son on the other arm.
He walked out onto the ice and stopped, square, between Hurn and the pit.
He was not a big man.
He was thin with hunger, with hollow eyes and chapped lips.
"Move," said Hurn.
"No."
"I said move."
"My son asked me for food," the young father said, in a voice that shook and held.
"He is three, and he said, eat. I had nothing to give him, and you had this."
He lifted the strip of meat.
"I carried your spear for six winters, Hurn. I gave you the first of every kill."
"I never asked why my boy's belly was so big."
