Chapter 24: Both Warm Winds
Lois stood in the doorway with her spoon in her hand and could not make her feet move.
Ilu hit her at a dead run.
The old woman went down on both knees, and the girl was in her arms, and Kesh was kneeling there too.
For a long minute, the three of them stayed in a heap on the cold stone, crying in two languages.
"You smell like smoke," Lois said into Ilu's hair, laughing and crying at once.
"Mar!"
"I know. I know, baby. Your mama's right here."
Lois looked up.
Kesh was kneeling a foot away with her face wet, and her hand was on Lois's sleeve.
She did not say anything.
She did not need to.
Lois put an arm around her shoulders, and Kesh bent her head against it, and they stayed like that.
Behind them, the whole tribe had gathered in the cave.
They stood in a silent half-circle, thirty of them, staring at the tall gold door in the stone.
Beyond it lay a bare cellar, with canning jars and a bulb on a wire.
Farther up, through an open door at the top of the steps, was a yellow kitchen.
A warm light poured out of it onto the rock.
Oro came forward on his staff.
He stopped at the threshold and looked through.
