Chapter 16: On Camera

I watched Nolan's smile on the little television for exactly as long as I could stand.

Then I turned it off.

"Okay," I said.

"Okay what?" said Carly.

"Okay, they can have me.

I'd rather they get it from my mouth than from his."

"Boss, no," said the youngest girl. "Don't go out there. Those people will eat you."

"They've already eaten me.

It's in the paper."

I took my apron off the hook.

I tied it on slowly, double knot at the back, the way I did every morning.

Then I looked at the five people standing in my back room, and my throat tightened.

"I'm not asking any of you to come out," I said.

"Shut up," said Carly, and took off her bandana to fix her curls.

"I'm going to stand behind you and look scary."

"I'm coming too," said the girl.

"Me too," said the quiet guy who ran deliveries.

All six of us went through the green door together.

The sidewalk was a wall of lenses.

A dozen reporters pushed forward.
