Chapter 12: The Pegboard
"Nobody knows," I said. "That was the rule."
I was standing in the doorway of the boiler room in my work coat with my laptop bag still on my shoulder.
The office had let out at noon for the holiday week.
I had come home early and gone down the back stairs to ask Rafa about a radiator, which was not the real reason.
The room was full.
Dolores sat on a stool beside the workbench with her cane across her knees and a foil tray of pierogi in front of her.
The man from 2F leaned against the pipes with a paper plate.
The woman from 2R, who lives directly under my kitchen, stood with a coffee cup.
The couple from 3F sat on an overturned bucket, sharing a fork.
And Rafa stood in the middle of them in his work shirt, with his hands hanging at his sides.
Nobody said anything for a moment.
"Honey," Dolores said, "we all knew by Halloween."
"What?"
"The glove," said the woman from 2R. "The pulse thing. I was right there."
"The pumpkin," said the man from 2F. "He carried an enormous pumpkin and never lit it."
