Chapter 14: Promise

The smell came out of the bus first, blood and the sweet rot of bites gone bad.

I couldn't go to them.

My left hand was on Calvin's partner, and if I took it off her, she would start to slide.

"Gloria," I said. "Everybody. Every nurse, the attending, the fighters. Get them off that bus."

They laid them on the bay floor in two rows.

A few had bleeds, and the attending went down the row stopping them.

Most had bites.

A man by the door had a paper luggage tag tied to his wrist with string.

Somebody in the Green had written on it in marker: BOUNCED. PRATT ST.

They had swept the curb on Pratt Street and sent it to the nest.

I needed crabs.

I shut my eyes and opened the Board.

The city came up behind my eyes.

Crabs had colors too, and on Thursday they'd been everywhere.

Now every crab in East Baltimore was moving.

They were walking west down the side streets, away from the Red.

In the white pavilion at the harbor, the bright green with my name on it sat very still.
