Chapter 18: The Count

The lobby had gone quiet under the new lights.

"What's expectant?" the man from Linwood asked me.

"It's a triage tag," I said. "We never say it in front of families."

"What's it mean?"

"It means we expect you to die, and we've stopped trying."

"It means it's going to do something to this building at dark tomorrow," Calvin said. "And it wants everybody to know it's not its fault."

"What can it do to a building?"

I'd been asking myself that since the voice stopped.

"It opened a tear over the park when I walked three hundred people through it," I said. "It can open one wherever it likes."

Nobody said anything.

I went up to the roof alone and opened the Board.

The white pavilion was where it always was, and the bright green with my name on it sat at its table.

Its band was right there over it, where I'd read my name on Thursday.

It said Charge.

I looked at that one word until my eyes burned, and I asked it in my head what it meant.

The answer came in the flat voice, for me alone.
