Chapter 18: What I Won't Give
Imogen's POV
Desmond was waiting outside the operating suite when I came out of scrub at noon.
He stood in the corridor with his hands behind his back, in the exact place where he used to wait for me when I was his resident.
"Five minutes," he said. "Please."
"Walk with me."
We went to the end of the corridor, to the window that looked down on the ambulance bay.
He didn't make me ask.
"I'm resigning the chair from the stage at the gala. It's on the program. I wanted you to hear it from me before you saw it."
"Declan told me this morning."
"Then he's a better man than I'd like him to be."
"He went easy on you."
"He didn't." Desmond almost smiled. "I'd have preferred it if he had."
He turned to face me.
"I'm not going to explain myself again. You've heard the reasons, and they're all small. I'm going to ask you one thing, and you can say no."
"Ask."
"Will you forgive me?"
The corridor was very quiet.
Behind us an orderly pushed a bed past the window and nodded at us both.
I had practiced my answer for three years, on planes and in the desert, in the dark.
It had always been a speech.
Now the answer was short.
"No."
His face did not move.
"I won't tell you that I will someday, either," I said. "You stood outside my operating room in your wedding suit and let me finish the case. You watched me walk out. You kept a letter from me for three years because you were afraid of what it said about you."
