Chapter 4: Nine Leather Chairs
The boardroom of Boston Harbor Medical Center had nine leather chairs, and my grandfather had taken the one at the head of the table.
He was eighty-one and used a cane, and he held it across his knees.
Nobody else sat in that chair when he was in the building.
Declan Maddox sat at the opposite end, with a single sheet of paper in front of him.
Desmond sat halfway down the long side, in his white coat, with his hands flat on the table.
He did not look at me when I came in at eight.
My grandfather did.
"Imogen," he said. "Sit."
"I'll stand."
"Then stand."
He turned to the board and spoke in the voice that had run this hospital for twenty-two years.
"I have served on this board for forty-one years. I am asking you to void this contract. It hands the chief's chair to a woman who walked out on her own sister's wedding day, and it takes the chair away from a man who held this department together after my son died."
"Dr. Pierce held it," Declan said, "for three years. We looked at his numbers."
"His numbers are fine."
"They're fine. They aren't good." Declan didn't raise his voice. "I want good."
"You want a name for the brochure," my grandfather said. "The dead man's daughter. A surgeon from the jungle."
"From a field hospital," I said. "It was a desert."
A few of the board members looked down at the table, and one of them smiled and hid it.
My grandfather rapped the cane once against the floor.
