Chapter 18: The Nurse

The Sunrise Home in Wuxi had a lobby television, a sunroom, and a smell of boiled cabbage and floor polish.

Linchuan parked across the street, in the shade of a plane tree, and did not get out.

"If he has a man here, he knows my car," he said. "Go in without me."

"Leave the door of the sunroom open. I will be listening to the radio and doing nothing suspicious."

"You don't know how to do nothing," said Anzhi.

"I am learning."

Linchuan reached across and straightened Anzhi's collar, which did not need it.

His hand stayed there, warm against the side of the neck.

"You will be very brave in there," he said.

"I'm going to feed an old woman congee."

"That is the same thing."

He kissed Anzhi below the ear, quickly, and in the back seat Yuan studied the plane tree with enormous attention.

Anzhi took Yuan by the sleeve and went in carrying a thermos.

His friend had made the congee before dawn that morning, with ginger, scallion, and a chicken he had begged off the kitchen.

"Old people eat it when they can't say what's wrong," he had said.

The matron at the desk looked at Yuan's face for a long moment and said nothing.

She led them down a corridor to a bright room with wicker chairs, where a woman sat by the window under a blanket.
