Chapter 16: The Founder's Hut

The door was not locked.

It swung inward on a leather hinge, and the hut smelled of cold dust and very old woodsmoke.

There was one room.

A cot with a straw mattress stood against the wall.

Next to it was a low table with a brush stand and a dry ink stone.

At the back, under a lean-to roof, stood a small forge.

It was only a brick hearth with a hand bellows and a squat anvil, no taller than a stool.

A few tools hung over it on pegs.

Hanjue stopped inside the door.

"He lived here," he said. "The Founder. After."

"After what?"

"After he stopped speaking to the Hall."

He went to the anvil and laid his hand on it, and took it away again quickly.

"I do not know how I know that."

"You know it because he's in this room," said Chuhe. "Anything else?"

Hanjue looked around.

His eyes stopped on the cot.

"There is a box under the bed," he said. "A flat one."

Chuhe knelt and pulled it out.

It was a small lacquer box, black and worn, tied with a faded red cord.

A dried flower, no bigger than a thumbnail, was caught under the knot.

He put it on the table.

"You open it," he said. "It's yours."

Hanjue's fingers shook on the cord.

Inside lay a single folded page of thick paper, and next to it a hammer.
