Chapter 16: Open Sky

Justine's POV

I listened to the recording four times at the kitchen island.

Then I put both hands on the marble and said a word I had not used since pharmacy school.

"He heard me," I said. "He heard every word I said at that window."

"The hotel swept the suite at noon," Rafe said. "The monitor was in the roses. His florist."

"He listened to me offer you a divorce."

"He listened to you offer me everything you had. And then he used it as a threat."

I stared at the little speaker on the counter.

"This is enough for Lorna."

"It's his voice. It's not enough. He'll say he was teasing a sick man."

"A pretty woman paid cash to wear a green coat."

"With no name. No money. No order with his name on it."

"The order is in his handwriting."

"The order is a form with a W on it." He rubbed his face. "He is very good at this, Justine."

I thought about it.

Then I took his phone, copied the recording from the pack onto it, emailed the file to Delphine, to Winnie and to myself, and put the phone back in his hand.

"Three copies," I said. "He can pat us all down."

Rafe laughed, short and tired, and for the first time in two days his shoulders came down.

"Come upstairs," he said.

"There's no upstairs. It's a penthouse."

"There's a roof."

The roof door was steel, with a keypad he had never used.

He punched in a code and held it open.

Outside it was cold and clear.

The city lay below us, all lit windows and car lamps, and above it the sky was black and enormous, with a few hard stars.
