Chapter 6: The Same Voice

Rafe went white.

"Delphine," he said. "Not here."

"Why not? You're wearing a shirt that isn't yours and she's standing in your doorway in the other one. I think this is exactly here."

The woman pushed her sunglasses up into her red hair and looked at me with warm green eyes.

"I'm Delphine Archer. I run events for the Holloway Group. I planned your wedding, so I know you hate peonies."

"I don't hate them," I said. "I'm allergic."

"That's why I swapped them for roses at midnight. You're welcome."

Behind me, I could hear the housekeeper in the kitchen, pretending to wipe a counter that was clean.

"Come on," I said. "Balcony."

I took Delphine by the sleeve and walked her through the living room and out the glass door, then shut it behind us.

It was cold and bright up there, forty floors above the street.

Delphine sat on the wide stone ledge.

"Don't ask me if it's safe," she said. "I do this at every venue."

"What did you mean, the one it picked?"

She turned her sunglasses over in her fingers.

"Three months ago a voice in my head told me I was the woman Rafe Holloway had to be won over by," she said. "It said he would fall for me if I tried."

I felt the wind go through my shirt.

"A flat voice," I said slowly. "It said 'Host.'"

"Yes," Delphine said. "I knew it. I told it no."

"You told it no."
