Chapter 13: Leaving
"I'll leave," said Liora.
She said it to the Queen of Cups on the oak table, because she could not say it to the old woman's face.
"Leaving is one spread," the old woman said. "I only asked what you mean to do."
"If I am gone from this castle, there is no woman at his side on the bridge."
"If you are gone, there is a priestess at the end of it, holding a cup for him, and a bolt aimed at the cup."
Liora's hands closed around her tin cup.
"Then I'll go far enough that he never thinks of me as the woman he'd step in front of."
"Child, he already does."
The old woman gathered the three cards and slid them back into the deck.
"Make your choice with your eyes open," she said, and she would say nothing more.
Liora packed that night, in the dark, by touch.
