Chapter 18: The Eve of the Oath
On the night before the Longest Night, the great hall held every baron in the north.
Two hundred of them sat down to the Oath banquet under a thousand candles, in furs and velvet and polished chains.
Liora sat at the high table in her wine silk, between Isaure and the Duke.
Eleven of the forty clocks in the study were ticking now, and the little brass one had not stopped once.
Under the tablecloth Bastien's three-fingered hand lay over hers.
He had not said a word to her since the soup, and he had not let go.
At the far end of the table Marguerite sat very straight in black velvet beside her husband.
She did not look up from her plate.
Hadrian waited until the roast was carried in.
Then he rose with his goblet in his hand and tapped it on the rim until the hall went quiet.
"My friends," he said. "My lords of the north. Before we cross the bridge tomorrow, a small matter of the law."
The baron in the green coat sat forward, because he had been waiting for it.
