Chapter 19: The Ring
The hall emptied slowly, and the servants moved down the long tables with trays.
Bastien stood by the high table with his arms folded, watching his cousin's blue coat go out through the far door.
"He'll have a plan for tomorrow that we haven't seen," he said.
"He has two."
"I know." He did not look at her. "Go to bed, Liora."
"No."
She took his hand and led him to the foot of the high table, where the candlelight did not quite reach.
A carved oak chair stood there by itself, turned a little away from the others.
A man's blue cloak lay folded over its back, and the dust on the cloak had been brushed off very recently.
"Whose is it?" she asked, though she knew.
"My father's," said Bastien. "It is laid out every Oath Eve. I never sit near it."
"And those?"
She nodded at the wall behind the chair.
Forty small iron lamps hung there in rows, each with a wick, and not one was lit.
"One for each of them," he said. "The captain lights them after the feast. I leave before he does."
