Chapter 11: Green

Everybody in the office looked at Mémère.

So did I.

She was screwing the lid back onto the 1911 jar, slow, with her small spotted hands.

"Mémère," I said.

"He's the CEO, chère." She didn't look up. "Hiring and firing is his."

"Who's going to taste?"

"I tasted fifty years before you were a gleam in anybody's eye," she said. "I'll taste."

Luc smiled at me.

Etienne put his hand on my back.

Just for a second, in front of everybody.

Then I walked out of the office I'd worked in for six years, and down the porch steps, and I didn't cry until I got to the car.

I moved out on Thursday, a day early, so Luc wouldn't get the satisfaction of watching.

It took one trip in Lise's van.

Seven years of marriage fit in four trash bags, two milk crates and a box of cookbooks.

The room over Lise's café used to be her mamma's apartment.

It has a bed, a dresser, a window that looks out on the causeway, and since the storm, a bright blue tarp where the ceiling used to be.

"It's cozy," Lise said.

"It's blue."

"It's like sleeping in a swimming pool. Very relaxing." She dropped a bag on the bed. "And it's free, and it's yours, and you can stay until you're ninety."

"Lise."

"Don't. Not till you're unpacked."

That night I lay on her mamma's old bed and looked up at the tarp moving in the wind, and I had nothing.

No job.

No house.

No husband, or about to have none.

And for the first time in six years, nobody telling me no.

On Saturday morning Etienne's truck pulled into the café lot.

The bed was full of five-gallon buckets.

Every one of them was full of green peppers.

"The storm stripped the high rows," he said. "These blew off before they turned. They'll never go red. I was going to compost them."
